Be aware in the event a surprise screen or unwanted popup that should take over the screen on your device – especially if it cannot be closed as normal with typical mouse – pointer actions. Very likely this is malware in action.
These screens and popups are the work of fraudsters. Their goal is to steal your personal information, take over control of your device and demand you pay them to recover it – which by the way – know that they never go away once they are in. They now have a key to your device – and you by association – if you let them in.
Recognize that many of these attempts will require the user (you) to call a “not toll free” phone number (DO NOT CALL IT !!!) only to slyly get you to divulge your personal information, permit their dangerous remote control access, and ultimately then insist that you pay an expensive fee – for the moment to get fixed (which by the way does not get rid of the problem (them). They will be back spying on your activity and setting things in place for more $$$ embezzling – as it was just way too easy for them. Common payment techniques include gift cards and internet currencies which they use to hide the money transaction trail.
Microsoft (by extension Windows), Apple, Google, etc will never contact any device user on our level to discuss computer infection issues, but your Internet Service provider (ISP) might have to shut your service & account off if your device infection is impacting their service (spreading or jamming) or other users – until you agree to get the problem device promptly serviced by your local IT support provider.
Know that this pattern is a deceiving ploy, and even though we get the warning messages, if we know the signs to stop and do not let them in, do not call their #, your device can most times be effectively cleaned. Do not interact with these fraudsters.
